My morning routine differs depending if it's a weekday or weekend, simply because my work schedule throughout the week doesn't leave me much room to have a slower morning. I love having a morning routine because it allows me to set the tone for the day. It also creates some stability in my life.

Morning Routine - Stretch

Don't get me wrong, my Sunday morning's aren't always the same as I like to leave a bit of wiggle room for flexibility based on how I'm feeling. However, I guess I am a creature of habit and tend to have the same ritual. Are you interested to learn how my mornings look like? Then keep on reading!

Let me walk through how my mornings usually go. I'm curious to know if yours is similar!

Morning Rituals: Monday through Friday

The moment I wake up, I turn my phone on. Yes, I know it's a bad habit and very hard to break! I have the Bible app on my phone so I try to read the Bible Verse of the day first. Reading God's word first thing in the morning is important to me. Then I check my emails and Instagram. That takes about 5-10 minutes.

Then I open my curtains to allow the morning sunshine beam through my windows. Natural sunlight immediately wakes me up and is a natural mood booster. I like to keep my windows open and breathe in that fresh air as it enters home.

Being the neat freak that I am, making my bed everyday makes a world of difference to the atmosphere of my room. I feel distressed when I have a messy bed!

Then I go to the kitchen to pour myself a glass of water. I squeeze half a lemon into my water for a natural detox (or 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar if I'm out of lemons). It wakes up my digestive system and gets everything moving if you know what I mean! I do this before brushing my teeth to protect my tooth enamel.

Afterwards, I brush my teeth, wash my face and apply makeup (only if I have a video conference call). Since my workday starts pretty early, I do not have much time to make myself a fancy breakfast!

So I like to meal prep the night before. My go-to recipe for my weekday breakfast is Butternut Squash Pancakes. I'm a health nut and like to include vegetables in my breakfast. It's quick and super easy to make! 

Butternut Squash Pancakes Recipe

  • 1/2 cup Butternut Squash puree
  • 4 eggs (preferably free-run)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of flour (I sometimes mix 1/4 cup of oat flour and 1/4 of spelt flour, depending what flour I have on hand really)

Once everything is mixed throughly, on high heat I measure out 1/4 cup of the mixture and let it bubble before I flip the pancake. It's nutricious, delicious and stays fresh in the fridge for up to 3 days.

I love having it handy in my fridge even as a midnight snack. I just heat it up in the microwave and pare it with my all natural Forbes Maple Syrup. And of course, I cannot forget my caffeine. I save coffee for the mornings where I reallllyy need it but 99.9% of the time my go to is tea. I gravitate towards green tea for that caffeine boost without the jitters throughout the day. And of course, I mix it with my collagen supplement to keep my hair, nails and skin youthful and glowing!

As I consume my breakfast, I like to spend the quiet mornings with God by listening to Daily Hope podcast by Pastor Rick. Or reading my morning devotions. It really helps set the tone for the day. My faith is important to me and a big part of my spiritual life. So I like to include that in my morning routine.

Lastly, if I have time I try to squeeze in a 30 minute to 1 hour workout session with the Kira Stokes app. She's incredible and have already seen results using her app since January. It's been a life saver for me since the gyms have been closed during this pandemic.

Weekend Mornings

The only difference with my Saturday & Sunday mornings is a slower start to my day. This is when I take the time to journal or allow myself to be lazy in bed and catch up on YouTube videos. But I always ensure that I drink a cup of water first thing!

My weekend breakfast is also a little bit fancier. I have the time to toast my sourdough bread and top it off with my home-made avocado mango salsa and sunny-side up eggs. All fresh and organic ingredients purchased online and delivered to my door-step from Fresh City Farms. It's my favourite online grocer that I discovered during this pandemic and so convenient too!

Surprisingly, I wake up at the same time everyday including weekends! My internal clock will not allow my body to sleep in no matter how late I went to bed the night before.

Regulating our circadian rhythm is so important for our overall health and well-being. It improves mental clarity, mood, and physical health too. Exposure to natural sunlight the moment you wake up will help your body be in tune with your environment and will help reset your internal clock. But always listen to your body, if you feel like it needs a bit more rest or an afternoon nap, then go for it!
